Keep It Collared: 3 Ways To Protect Your Dog

Terra Fields

If you own a dog, you don't want it to run away. Once a dog runs away from home, they're exposed to a wide variety of risks, including accidents, dog fights, and malnutrition. Not to mention the fear that they experience when they can't find their way home. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to protect your dog, and here are three of them.

Start With a Dog Collar

If your dog doesn't have a collar, now's the time to fix that. You might not realize this, but giving your dog a collar is one of the most important accessories you can purchase for them. Not only does a dog collar give you something to attach an identification tag to, but it also shows others that your dog is loved and cared for. If you want to something different for your dog, choose a dog collar that's made out of recycled fire hoses. Your dog will have something unique to wear while staying safe. When choosing a collar for your dog, be sure you check the fit. The fire hose dog collar should be snug, but not so snug that it causes a risk for choking or suffocation.

Insist on a Microchip

In addition to a collar, your dog needs one more safety-targeted accessory; a microchip. If your dog hasn't been microchipped yet, now's the time to take care of that. No matter how diligent you are about the safety, there's always the chance that your dog will escape from the yard. Worse yet; someone could steal your dog while it's in the yard. A microchip will ensure that you have a way of identifying your dog should it run away from home or be taken from you.

Inspect Your Fence Daily

If your dog spends any amount of time in the yard, you need to inspect the fence on a daily basis. It doesn't take long for a dog to dig a hole. Unfortunately, once it has a hole dug, or has found a damaged area to squeeze through, your dog can be long-gone before you realize there's a problem. The best way to avoid that heartache is to inspect your fence each day. The daily inspections will allow you to find recently dug holes, or damaged areas in the fence that need to be repaired. It's also a good idea to invest in a perimeter alarm. That way, you'll be alerted should your dog attempt an escape.

Good Record-keeping Helps New Business Owners Avoid Tax-time Headaches

I have been a business owner for years, and I want to share some tips for success with new entrepreneurs out there who are struggling. I have had my share of business ups and downs, but there was one lesson that it took me way too long to learn: Good financial record-keeping year-long keeps tax time from being so stressful. During my first year in business, I kept most business expense receipts, but when tax time arrived, I found out that I needed to save much more than just those receipts. Thanks to technology, I was able to recover most of the documentation I needed, but it was a huge headache. I quickly invested in good record-keeping software and it made tax time much less stressful during the following years.
