3 Tips For Performing A Home Radon Test

Terra Fields

Radon is a tasteless and odorless gas that may be seeping into your home. That's why many people test their homes for radon to find out just how much of a risk they have. While radon test kits are simple to use, it helps to know some tips for using them in your home.

Place The Test In the Lowest Lived-In Level

You'll always want to test the lowest part of the home that you are actually living in. If you have a basement that's strictly used for storage or a crawl space you rarely go into, those should not be areas that you are testing. Test finished basements where you spend a lot of time, or the first level of your home if that's your lowest primary living space. This is to ensure that the air quality is safe in the parts of your home that matter.

Avoid Any Drafts In The Test Area

It's important to make sure that there are no drafts in the space that you are testing for radon. This means that you must close all of the windows, keep the doors closed, and do anything you can to prevent the air from being disturbed. This will ensure that you're getting the best possible testing environment for your radon test kit.

There are also some places where you may not realize you are getting a draft. For example, there may be vents for your HVAC system that are causing the air to be disrupted. Even a laundry room can cause a draft with the ventilation pipes going to the outside.

Record The Exact Amount Of Testing Time

Your test kit will want you to record the start and end time of the test so that it is known exactly how long the test kit has been exposed to the air. Make sure that you record the exact times that the kit was left open to test the air. There will be a minimum and maximum amount of test time that you need to adhere to for it to be accurate. It is also important that you return the test kit in a timely manner. Delaying when you send the test kit in can cause the results to be inaccurate.

If you discover that you have radon in your home or to learn more about radon, reach out to a company in your area that provides radon testing and radon mitigation.

Good Record-keeping Helps New Business Owners Avoid Tax-time Headaches

I have been a business owner for years, and I want to share some tips for success with new entrepreneurs out there who are struggling. I have had my share of business ups and downs, but there was one lesson that it took me way too long to learn: Good financial record-keeping year-long keeps tax time from being so stressful. During my first year in business, I kept most business expense receipts, but when tax time arrived, I found out that I needed to save much more than just those receipts. Thanks to technology, I was able to recover most of the documentation I needed, but it was a huge headache. I quickly invested in good record-keeping software and it made tax time much less stressful during the following years.
